Seventy-six people were arrested over the weekend and 80 vehicles were impounded by a multi-agency task force charged with combating impaired driving and street racing in downtown Los Angeles, Carson and the South Bay, authorities said Wednesday.
The task force, made up of 26 officers from the California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and officers from several local police departments, patrolled downtown Los Angeles Saturday night, focussing on drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol, said CHP Officer Edgar Figueroa.
The results of that night’s patrols included 29 arrests for driving under the influence, nine traffic citations and 26 impounded vehicles, Figueroa said. On Sunday night, the task force shifted to Carson and the South Bay to crack down on street racing and related activities, Figueroa said.
The officers made 47 misdemeanor arrests for suspended licenses, illegal speed contests and other racing-related offenses and impounded 54 vehicles, he said.
“We will not tolerate our streets being turned into race tracks,” Figueroa said. “Streets are meant for people to travel through without being in fear of getting hit by reckless, irresponsible drivers.”
